More Languages

I like Aardvark, it does what others services can't. But there is one problem, it is only in English. I have a lot of friends that would use Aardvark if it was on Spanish. So if you could support more languages it would be cool. I know its gonna take some (a lot) of time but the work would be regarded.

This is something we are definitely planning on doing once our user base grows more. Thanks for your patience!

  1. For me it's a yes-and-no at the same time, as we are "forced" to talk english, we will get better and faster answers as the community is bigger. I think of english as a kind of universal language. Perhaps the best solution will be a little text under the user saying "You can also answer in <user_prefered_language>".

  2. Rather than making it one language or the other, I prefer multi-language as I can receive and answer q's in English, Spanish and French.

This would be a very important feature. Users could select their preferred languages on their profile.

    please also in Dutch

3 votes for Turkish language. I would definitely help :)

I'd be delighted to help translate Aardvark into Russian if you were up to it. :D

I think this is a good idea. I often miss being able to ask questions in Norwegian. I consider myself fairly fluent in English, but some questions are hard to formulate in anything but your mother tongue (e.g., my English vocabulary for practical stuff like carpenting is very limited), and some questions (e.g., relating to tax code) can only be answered by people from your own country.

    3 votes for Spanish!

Broken English doesn't help anybody, the person asking will not understand the answer as well as in their own language... There shouldn't be any need of using a language if one is not fluent. The main languages spoken in USA, like Spanish, should have a pool of people big enough already.

Isn't the HQ based on California after all?

Totalmente de acuerdo contigo Jesi, es una excelente idea

I would suggest adding a language tag people, questions and answers (you could detect easily and automatically tag the language of the question / answer).
I disagree with Camilo in using Google Translate as the standard translation tool. It's been improving a lot but isn't able to recognize the context of a text (and then to translate it accurately).
A 'help to translate' service could be implemented so bilingual people (in question / answer languages) and the Topic could help translate some answers.

I think you should make multi language site.
I will help for vietnamese version

  12. I seem to be a local expert in Paris, and I get a lot of questions from people with French names, in broken English. Is it wrong for me to reply in French? From the 'Anatomy […]' paper, I understand you scan replies too. Most questions I get are still from tourists, but I'm not sure the service will get the same traction if I use was still is a weird wayaround with my friends.

Just an idea, but I think separating languages would be limiting. I know I can get more results in English than in Spanish about stuff like PHP, so I think a solution like automatic translation via Google Translate would be best. For example I type a question in Spanish, Vark posts it to the world (giving it in each person's language), and gives me back responses in both the original language and mine. I think Google Translate is mature enough to support this. At the very least it would be really, really cool to see.

  15. This is certainly useful for local knowledge (like "What consumer review sites are there for retailers in Bucharest"), but writing questions in languages other than English may drastically narrow the pool of people who could answer general things like "What is the starting point for learning about how to program Perl web applications". Perhaps it would be useful to warn the user to address questions to a global audience, unless they reference a specific location.

    Follow-up:
The fellow who wanted Chinese support says that he's willing, I think, to help develop the web-apps into Chinese, if you need. His message to me appears below:

    我也是做互联网相关工作的,来这里是为了尝试更有新意的网络应用程序(webapps)。

    如果在国际化方面可以为Aardvark做什么工作的话,比如生成中文语言包等等,我很乐意参与:)

I'm posting on behalf of someone who signed up for Aardvark who really only speaks Chinese. I doubt it'd be easy to figure out what the question is in Chinese (or not, maybe your linguists can pin down questions easily), but there are 1.5 billion people in China. If you create Chinese support (and can keep Vark uncensored) then you'll find one of your largest potential customer bases in Asia.

Three votes for Japanese, so I can be an effective aardvocate =) With a wide adoption of a tool like aardvark, it could change the entire landscape of communication.

Yes, this would be great! It would also be great if it would support multiple languages, In sweden for example most people speak very good english, so i can get and send questions in both languages. Perhaps toss in google-translate-support while you are at it?

  20. Same here with German again. My friends love how Vark works and are impressed by the results, but having a local Vark community that could answer your questions would be even more amazing.
